How it works

Walking or running on soft sand costs more energy than the same distance on a hard surface, because the foot sinks and slips with every step, so the muscles must stabilise the ankle and push off from a surface that gives way. This calculator first works out the hard-surface figure, then applies a sand multiplier to it.

The hard-surface figure uses the standard MET formula: calories = MET × body weight in kilograms × time in hours, where time is distance divided by speed. The MET values used here are: walking — leisurely 3 km/h: 2.5, moderate 5 km/h: 3.5, brisk 6.5 km/h: 4.5; running — easy 8 km/h: 8.0, steady 10 km/h: 10.0, fast 12 km/h: 12.5. These are planning estimates, not laboratory measurements for any one person.

The sand multipliers used here are: walking on soft sand about 1.8 times the hard-surface figure, and running on soft sand about 1.3 times. Walking rises more because a slow, sinking step loses a larger share of its push-off energy; a running stride is already springy and spends less time sinking into the sand. Deep, dry, loose sand will cost more than firm, wet sand near the waterline, so treat the sand figure as a midpoint, not a precise count.

How to use your result

Use the hard-surface figure as your baseline and the sand figure when planning a beach session, especially if you are new to sand training: start with a shorter sand distance than you would cover on a road, build up gradually, and allow extra recovery time. If the extra calories look large, that is a sign to shorten the session rather than to eat back the full difference automatically.
